obama is opening leads in states that mitt romney can least afford to lose. have a look at our new poll today. the president now has a 10-point lead in the swing state of ohio, 53% to 43. in florida, another key swing state, mr. obama's lead is nine points, 53% to 44. and the president leads by 12 point in pennsylvania, 54 to 42. this quinnipiac university/cbs news/"new york times" polls has a margin of roar of three points so the leads are significant. our cbs news election analysis team is moving ohio from a toss- up to leaning toward mr. obama. with that, we estimate 255 electoral votes are solidly in the obama camp or leaning that way. for governor romney the number is 206 with 270 needed to win. the president would have to pick up just 15 in the remaining toss-up state that you see on this map in gray. if the president wins ohio, governor romney would have to nearly sweep those toss-up states in order to win the white house. so no surprise that we find both candidates in ohio today. our campaign 2012 team is on their trail and we're going to start tonight with nancy cordes. nancy.

. but first, to politics. >>> mitt romney is venturing out of the swing states today. romney this hour is trying to pluck pennsylvania from the grasp of president obama with just 39 days until the election. pennsylvania's one of the states that is leaning toward obama, but not -- so, jim, we have been seeing romney confine his campaign to the nine swing states, why is he taking a shot at a state that has been leaning obama? >> reporter: yeah, fredricka, it did catch a lot of people off guard today to hear mitt romney not only at a fund-raiser earlier this morning but at an event that wrapped up here at a valley forge military academy. he said he'll win the state of pennsylvania and this state has not traditionally in the last several months been lumped in with the other swing states out there that both president obama and mitt romney are neck and neck in. we have seen a lot of swing states in recent days moving away from mitt romney. you saw the latest battleground polls in ohio and florida where president obama increased his lead over mitt romney, but just a few moments ago here at th
. take a look at this, shows governor romney with a double-digit lead among veterans in three states. in florida, mitt romney is up by 20 percentage points. another study, including third-party candidates finds the majority of veterans and military families in colorado favor governor romney. you can put that first screen up again, and we will discuss it with chris stirewalt. before we put you on screen, a 20-point advantage for romney in florida, 12 points in ohio and 12 points in virginia, all among military veterans. can you tell us, chris, what is going on? how is the voting bloc? >> i'm sure that many viewers like you put things back up now. the true picture is, florida, virginia, north carolina -- these are states with very substantial veteran and military populations. republicans generally do better among those who have served in the military. john mccain did not do quite as well. when you look at the narrow states come in there. if things get out of whack for the president with military voters and veterans. when we look at hispanic voters, the goal isn't mitt romney doesn't wa
